Review + Comparisons: Sonia Kashuk Tapered Powder and Domed Multi-Purpose Brush (2016 Collection)

Sonia Kashuk Tapered Powder Brush 19 Domed Multi-Purpose 18 2016 Review

Long time readers know that Sonia Kashuk is one of my go-to brands for quality brushes. The black handle brushes are very well made and are reasonably priced. When I found out that new brushes were being launch for her 2016 collection, I knew that I had to get my hands on them.

Both the Sonia Kashuk Tapered Powder No.19 brush and Domed Multi-Purpose No.18 brush are made of natural goat hair and feel very soft, just like the other black handle brushes from her line. They also have the same type of handle with an ergonomic design and are even weighted, which feels very comfortable in the hand. The only difference is that they no longer come with a black ferrule and have been recently revamped with a gold one. (The #24 Dense Blush Powder brush and #29 Domed Blusher brush that are mentioned in this post are now available with a gold ferrule. Both versions have the same brush head.) They did shed a few hairs during the first week, which is normal, but haven't shedded since.

Sonia Kashuk Tools Pointed Tapered Powder Brush No. 19 vs No. 29 Review

Sonia Kashuk Tapered Powder Brush No.19 ($17.99) - The bristles are longer and not as dense as the No.29 brush (review), which makes it ideal for working with highly pigmented blushes. It lays down a light application and prevents you from looking like a clown over applying product. I love how it distributes powder products evenly onto the skin without ever looking blotchy.

The brush is also great for applying a light dust of powder. The size of the head is big enough to cover the entire face quickly, but also tapered enough to fit into the contours of the face easily. It also works well for removing excess powder under the eyes, especially for those who “bake” because it won't disrupt your concealer or foundation. This is a must-have tool for those who are heavy handed and for those who want to achieve a natural effect. (The Sonia Kashuk #19 brush measures a little over 7.5 inches in total length. The Charlotte Tilbury Powder & Sculpt brush (reviewis shown for size reference.)

Sonia Kashuk Domed Multi-Purpose #18 Comparison Review Dense Blush Powder #24

Sonia Kashuk Domed Multi-Purpose Brush No.18 ($15.99) - The bristles are white and feel the softest out of all the brushes mentioned in this post. It has a smaller head and is not as dense as the No.24 (review), but I wouldn't consider it to be flimsy. It still works well for applying powder/mineral foundation and buffing out over applied blush or bronzer. The size of the head also allows it to get underneath the eyes easily.

For maximum coverage, I recommend the #24, since the bristles are denser. Those who have a heavy hand and prefer lighter coverage would find the #18 to be more suitable for applying powder foundation, since the bristles are not as densely packed. (Keep in mind that you can still achieve lighter coverage if you use less product with the #24 and achieve maximum coverage if you use more product or build in layers using the #18.)

You can also use the side of the brush to contour and then use the top to blend out any harsh lines. The MAC 109 is smaller and offers more precision. (The Sonia Kashuk #18 brush measures a little over 7 inches in total length.)

Bottom Line: The #18 works essentially the same as the #24 brush, but it's nice to have it as a backup, while the #19 is a great (and much needed) addition to the Sonia Kashuk collection. Both brushes are very well made, as one would expect from her black handle line. I’ve had some for more than 5+ years and they are still going strong! I highly recommend checking them out!

Note: The Sonia Kashuk Tapered Powder brush and Domed Multi-Purpose brush are exclusively available at Target.

  1. I have 3, yes 3, of the Sonia kashuk #29 brush! I love it for bronzer! It applies it lightly but not too light!

    1. I love the #29 too! I use it when I want more coverage. It's so easy to build up the intensity of the product that you're using because of its density.
