Review + Swatches: Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation, Makeup Setting Spray + Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation 4.0 NC30 Review

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation vs Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Comparison Review

Packaging: The bottle looks like it's made of metal, but it's actually plastic & feels lightweight. So, it's great for travel. I like that it allows you to see when you're running low on the product. It also has an airless pump, which makes it easy to get out every last bit without wasting a single drop.

Scent: It's fragrance-free and doesn't smell like anything during application.

Color: It currently comes in 24 shades. Those ending in ".5" have a cool undertone, while those ending in "0" have a warm undertone. It also oxidizes just a tiny little bit within a few seconds of application. I didn't experience any oxidation throughout the day and it didn't make me oompa loompa orange like other reviewers have mentioned. Shade 4.0 has a strong yellow undertone and matches my NC30/35 skin tone perfectly. (For reference, my other foundation shades are L'oreal True Match W4, Dior 021 mixed with 031 and Burberry Cashmere in Beige No.26.)

Oil-Free Formula: The Urban Decay All Nighter foundation is not as runny as the Naked Skin and not as thick as the Kat Von D Lock It foundation. It spreads onto the skin easily and blends like a dream, which really surprised me, given that it's a full coverage foundation. After looking at the ingredients list, I realize that it's able to glide onto the skin like butter because cyclopentasiloxane is one of the main ingredients. (Cyclopentasiloxane is a type of silicone that forms a protective barrier on the skin and acts as a mild water repellent. It also fills in fine lines & wrinkles and blurs imperfections.)

On the skin, it feels just as comfortable as my other foundations, including MUFE HD, L'oreal True Match and Dior Forever. It also doesn't feel heavy or suffocating like many silicone primers can.

The foundation leaves a soft matte finish without looking flat. It doesn't suck out all of the moisture from your face like most traditional matte foundations do. For that reason, prepping your skin with a light moisturizer, such as the Lancome Bienfait Aqua Vital Lotion, Benefit Triple Performing Emulsion and Bareminerals Smart Combination Emulsion would suffice. Also, if there are any dry patches on your skin, I find that this foundation looks more forgiving compared to other matte foundations. (Most foundations look flawless under artificial/indoor lighting. The "true" test is checking it under natural lighting.)

For those who are wondering, the Naked Skin foundation is thinner in terms of consistency, has lighter coverage and leaves a demi-matte finish that's neither dewy nor completely matte.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Aqua (Water/Eau), Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Butylene Glycol, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Magnesium Sulfate, Lauryl Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Triethoxysilylethyl Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer-3, Propylene Carbonate, Tocopherol. May Contain: CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491/77492/77499 (Iron Oxides).

Marc Jacobs The Face II Sculpting Foundation Brush No. 2 Review

Application: For this particular foundation, my favorite brushes to use are the Marc Jacobs #2 (review) and Sigma F84. Both brushes are made of bristles that are synthetic, super soft and very dense, which makes blending a breeze. Also, they tend to absorb some of the product, which prevents the foundation from looking heavy. I'm still getting the coverage that I need, but without looking like a cakey mess.

One pump plus a tiny little bit more is enough to cover the whole face. One and a half pump is way more than you really need and can start making the foundation look cakey. There's also no need to build coverage or apply multiple layers. One layer is enough to achieve a full coverage finish. (Tip: Pump the product onto the brush and then dab it all over your face. Finally, blend, blend, blend!)

Marc Jacobs #2 Foundation Brush vs Sigma F84 Review

Longevity: This foundation starts separating within 6 hours on my oily t-zone and lasts about 10 hours without moving or fading on the rest of my face. Keep in mind that I don't wear a primer and only set the foundation with powder. I have not found a face primer that has substantially lengthened the wear of my makeup. At best, they make foundation go on smoother and fill in my pores. Also, I'm dealing with 90 degrees weather right now. So most foundations, except the Dior Forever (review), easily melt off my face during this time of year. I also tested it in a controlled setting and wore it at home with the air conditioner on. I was able to get the foundation to last at least 12 hours without separating or fading. (For reference, I have an oily t-zone and neither dry nor oily skin on the rest of my face.)

Bottom Line: This foundation is ideal for those with normal skin. For those with combination skin, like mine, it works better during the winter/fall season rather than the hot summer months.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray Review Travel Size

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray ($30 for 118ml/4oz) - I got the deluxe sample size (15ml/0.5oz) as a free gift with purchase.

Packaging: It comes in a plastic bottle with a sturdy cap. The nozzle sprays an even mist. Just make sure to hold it 8-10 inches away from the face, so you don't drown your face with the product.

Scent: It does contain fragrance according to the ingredients list, but it's not overwhelming whatsoever and it doesn't really smell like anything.

Oil-Free Formula: The setting spray forms a thin coating on the skin and prevents makeup from moving, fading and separating. I usually spray twice (3 times maximum) and it dries down quickly. It feels completely weightless, non-sticky and non-greasy on the skin. Most importantly, it does exactly what it's suppose to and actually lengthens the wear of makeup for a few hours more!

Ingredients: Aqua (Water/Eau), Alcohol Denat, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, PVP, Methyl Perfluorobutyl Ether, Methyl Perflouroisobutyl Ether, Dimethicone PEG-7 Phosphate, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Caprylyl Gylcol, Menthyl Methacrylate Cross Polymer, Poloxamer 407, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Cocamidopropyl PG Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Glycereth-5 Lactate, N,2,3-Trimethyl-2-Isopropyl Butamide, Ethylhexyl Isononanoate, Isononyl Isononanoate, Fragrance, Aloe Barbandensis Leaf Extract.

Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème Review Medium 19 Light 11 Swatch

Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Creme Review Applicator

Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème ($26 for 6.25g/0.22oz) - I got the deluxe sample size (1.85g/0.065oz) as a free gift with purchase. I've used it more than a dozen times already and there's still alot of product left.

Packaging: It comes in a plastic tube with a doe foot applicator. The spongey wand is slanted and has a triangular shape, which makes it perfect for placing product with precision using the tip and coating larger areas using the wide base. I can get right underneath the eye area and around the inner corner of the eye with ease.

Color: For the undereye area, I prefer a concealer that (1) has a pink undertone and (2) is one shade lighter than my skin tone, such as the MUFE HD concealer in R30, as it works better for counteracting dark circles and brightening up that area. The Kat Von D concealer in Light 11 has a neutral undertone, while Medium 19 has a cool undertone and is better for those with an NC37-NC40 skin tone. For my purpose, Light 13 would have been the best choice, since it has a cool pinkish undertone. However, I can still make Light 11 work.

For concealing blemishes on my face, Medium 17 would be a better match for my NC30/35 skin tone since it has a warm undertone and is darker than both Light 11 and 13. (The Kat Von D Lock It Foundation in M54 is too dark and peachy for me and is only shown for color comparison.)

Formula: The texture is thick & creamy and is like a more concentrated version of the Kat Von D Lock It FoundationIt's very heavy duty and works best for covering blemishes & problem areas around the face. A little goes a long way!

The concealer can also cover dark circles very well with just the tiniest amount of product and with one layer. The tricky part is preventing it from looking cakey and "cracked." For the best results, (1) make sure to hydrate your skin with a good moisturizer, (2) use less than what you think you need, (3) use a dense synthetic brush, such as the Sonia Kashuk #121 (comparison pictures), in a tapping motion for easy blending or use a Beauty Blender (review + guide) as it'll absorb some of the product & prevent the concealer from looking cakey, and (4) make sure to set the concealer with powder to prevent it from fading & creasing throughout the day.

    1. I'm Y335/127 in the MUFE HD foundation when I'm at my lightest and Y345 when I'm a little bit darker. I'm also in shade Stromboli for the Nars Sheer Glow foundation. =)
