Swatches & Comparisons: NYX Nude Matte Eyeshadow in Bare My Soul, Betrayal + Haywire

From Top Clockwise: NYX Haywire ~ NYX Betrayal ~ NYX Bare My Soul

Pros:

  • texture feels slightly silky & buttery
  • great pigmentation when layered & used with a primer
  • applies evenly
  • blends easily
  • does not look chalky
  • doesn't crease when used with a primer
  • lasts at least 12 hours without fading
  • no fallouts during application
  • no chunky glitters
  • affordable
  • can be depotted and the pan fits in the MAC and CS empty 28 pan eyeshadow palettes
  • containers are wrapped in plastic seal

Cons:
  • shades are not truly matte (This is only a con because NYX claims that they have a matte finish. I personally do not mind that there is a slight sheen to them.)
  • gets dusty in the pan

From Top Clockwise: Haywire ~ Betrayal ~ Bare My Soul

Packaging: The NYX Nude Matte eyeshadows are housed in a black container with a lid that flips open, which look quite similar to MAC's packagingThe only difference is that the NYX ones have a glossy finish and feel lighter. I'm also glad that they're wrapped in plastic seal because it's easier to detect whether anyone has tampered with them with their dirty fingers.

The pans are the same size as MAC's eyeshadows and they fit perfectly in my empty 28 pan eyeshadow palette. (Keep in mind, you need to put a magnet behind the pan for it to "stick" to the palette. I use the thin round ones that MAC uses for their refill pans. They can be purchased at craft stores or on ebay.) I also depot the NYX eyeshadows the same way that I depot my MAC eyeshadows, which is super easy and quick. The only problem is that the label on the back of the pot is slightly larger than the eyeshadow pan. So, I had to cut the label to the size that I needed and the results looked ugly. (I'm not crafty and I don't know how to cut out a perfect circle without butchering it.) However, I don't mind the way that it looks because the label is on the back of the pan, where no one can see it and it's only there for reference.

To depot, (1) flip the lid open, (2) pop out the plastic insert by using a tweezer, scissor or butter knife, (3) place the plastic insert on a flat iron/hair straightener for 20 seconds to 45 seconds, (4) wear gloves & remove the plastic insert from the flat iron/hair straightener, and (5)
finally, turn the plastic insert upside down and push the pan out onto a soft surface, using a tweezer, scissor or butter knife. To remove the label on the back of the pot, place the pot on the flat/iron hair straightener for 10 seconds and then remove the label using a tweezer.

Bare My Soul ~ Betrayal ~ Haywire

Application: The NYX eyeshadows are not as pigmented as MAC's eyeshadows (I don't expect them to be since they are less than 5 bucks a pop.), but they are easily buildable and offer great pigmentation when worn with a primer underneath. They also apply evenly without looking chalky.

The texture of the eyeshadows feels slightly buttery and they are definitely softer than MAC's eyeshadows. For this reason, they can get really dusty and messy in the pan, but they also blend alot easier.

I didn't experience any fallouts during application. (Just make sure you use a dense brush and tap off any excess before applying.) They also last at least 12 hours on my eyes without fading. (I have oily lids and never test eyeshadows without using a primer underneath.)

NYX Nude Matte Eyeshadow in Bare My Soul (1.6g for $4.99) is a cool toned brownish grey with a satin finish. When worn on my eyes, Copperplate is slightly darker, more brown and less grey.

NYX Nude Matte Eyeshadow in Betrayal (1.6g for $4.99) is a neutral dark brown with a satin finish. Corduroy and Espresso are more pigmented and the former is more reddish, while the latter is more cool toned.

NYX Nude Matte Eyeshadow in Haywire (1.6g for $4.99) is a taupey grey with a hint of purple and a satin finish. Betrayal is more brown, while Confession is more pigmented, darker, and grey. When worn on my eyes, Haywire looks greyish brown with barely a hint of purple.

All 3 NYX eyeshadows are not
true matte shades because they have a slight sheen to them. However, I love all of them because they're very wearable and perfect for an everyday neutral eye look. I use them on my crease (separately) and they define my eye really well without looking too dramatic for the day time. They are definitely safe to wear to school or even at the office!

Bottom Line: Some of the NYX Nude Matte eyeshadows (e.g. Confession) are more pigmented than others. Bare My Soul, Betrayal and Haywire need to be layered and worn with a primer underneath for them to have great pigmentation. However, I still recommend them, especially if you're on a tight beauty budget, because they apply evenly, blend like a dream and last all day without creasing or fading.

Note: The NYX Nude Matte eyeshadows are available for purchase on their online store and at Ulta for $4.99 each. Copperplate, Corduroy and Espresso each contain 1.5g and are available at Nordstrom for $15 (pot) and $11.50 (refill pan). The empty 28 pan palette can be purchased from Coastal Scents for $9.95.

  1. I love NYX stuff. The shadows are extremely pretty and they remind me of the naked palettes.

    1. I have about a half-dozen of the Nude Matte eyeshadows, and I *love* them!
I'm blessed with large green eyes, and I love to use neutral shadows to make them pop.
And since I'm 50+ I tend to go easy on the shimmer.
NYX shadows are cruelty-free, good quality, cheap, and available in a wide array of shades.
      What's to not love?

  2. The quality of these looks fantastic! I don't really mind they're not really matte either. The grand majority of my eyeshadows at least have a sheen, because matte shades tend not to look good on me for some reason!

  3. You're not alone Sunny! I have small, hooded eyes and I rarely wear matte shades on my lids. It makes my eye look dull and flat. =/ I usually wear shimmery shades on my lids and then balance out the look by wearing matte shades in the crease and outer v. =)

  7. So far, I've got only "Craving" from this line; "Happy Hour" is on the way, and I really want at least "Betrayal" after seeing this post.
I like matte and satin finishes on my eyes. I have large eyes, and while my skin still looks pretty good for 53, I find the "soft focus" effect of mattes very flattering.

  8. Let's see ...
I have Haywire, Coquette, Skinny Dip, Craving, and I am probably about to acquire Bare It All.
I'm 50+, and though good habits have left me with fairly smooth skin, I like the "soft focus" effect that matte and satin textures impart. I will wear touches of soft shimmer on browbones and on tear ducts only, though.
